"SAS MD Microelectronics – A New Generation of Large-Scale Display, Low-Energy and Eco-Friendly

This startup based in Aveyron is developing an alternative display panel to current solutions, particularly LED technology. Built on microfluidics, this innovative product has a low environmental impact. The company is also committed to contributing to the revitalization of its local region.

Display panels are everywhere: road signage (car parks, train stations, etc.), public information (municipalities, medical practices, and more), and advertising (roadsides, bus stops). Today, these large-scale displays are energy-intensive and polluting.

“After 27 years working with video walls—in production, R&D, and quality control—I began to question about many inappropriate uses of these displays. For some applications, both outdoors and indoors, LED technology is not relevant. More broadly, these displays disrupt biodiversity, and their manufacturing process requires significant resources,” explains Michel Delmas, founder of MD Microelectronics.

The engineer then studies microfluidic technologies, converting methods originally used in medical research for display applications. In practical terms, a system of micro-pumps and micro-valves injects colored fluids into a patented network of microchannels, reaching each pixel. Images are created through the superposition of colors.

This reflective screen does not emit light, as it relies entirely on ambient light. No energy is required, except when changing the displayed image.

“Our rewritable display can be installed anywhere, even without access to a power source. In terms of implementation, this technology is similar to semiconductors, and thanks to our partnership with LAAS, we are currently fixing the last technical locks,” adds Michel Delmas.

Labelled as a DeepTech company by Bpifrance, MD Microelectronics has leveraged early-stage funding to develop its research and patent its technology. The startup collaborates with several technological partners—including LAAS, INSA, and Technacol—to test, improve reliability, and ensure the system is repairable.

Beyond the display itself, every effort is made to design a robust, eco-friendly product: glue-free assembly, recyclable or recycled materials, food-grade fluids, and hybrid materials.

Born in Aveyron, Michel Delmas is developing his project within the local technological ecosystem, working with partners such as Cartelec (Saint-Affrique) and Atelier du Vallon (Clairvaux).

“We are in a region of innovation, where there is a strong legacy in display technologies. And it’s also a great place to live. We have everything we need here.”

The company has already contacts with former customers and distributors, who are strongly interested in the technology. The first demonstrator is currently being finalized—an important step toward validating the concept before moving into industrial production."
